State LEGO League Competition & Valentines Preparations

On Friday we headed up to Grand Forks since Brynn had to be at UND at 7:30 AM on Saturday to report for the state LEGO League competition. We thought we would go up early to swim and the hotel and what not. Well, we didn't get going very early so it was already a bit late by the time we got checked into our hotel. The pool area was a little disappointing and we only spent about 10 minutes in the hot tub before returning to our room to get ready for bed.

Of course no one slept very well, as always seems to be the case when we stay in a hotel. Brynn was up and ready to compete in the morning, though. Dana dropped her off and then came back to pick up Clara and me. The morning consisted of presentations on the team's robot design, core values and research project. The presentations were very interesting for Dana and me to watch and the kids did such a good job. Clara didn't find it as interesting and was over it all pretty quickly. That and she was lacking sleep. :-/

Trying to stay occupied.

This portion was their presentation on their core values, but they were surprised with an impromptu LEGO design project.

Their research project was on the effects of radiation and their idea was to incorporate metal into astronauts' suits to deflect radiation.

The afternoon was the actual robotics competitions, just like we watched at the regional level.

The Cardinals!

Unfortunately the Cardinals didn't go home with any awards, but they didn't seem too deflated. They did a great job nonetheless!

Right after the day was done, we headed back home. I thought the sunset looked so pretty out my window and I was looking at this photo after I snapped it with my phone and as I looked back up to try and take a better one, the sun was already gone.

When I walking down the hall during teaching Sunday school yesterday, I took note of the door that Clara usually exits which leads to their outdoor play area. With the nasty weather last week, I knew they hadn't been able to play outside and when I saw the state of the playground with so much snow, I figured it might be a while yet before they get out there. However, I was talking to Clara's teacher at pick-up today and she said it was all clear for them today so they were excited to be back out there.

Yesterday afternoon we decided to bake some Valentine's cut-out cookies.

Clara made the biggest mess of her life, I swear. She did a good job cutting out her cookies, though.

We couldn't find any Harry Potter valentines to go with Brynn's quidditch box she made, so she picked out Grumpy Cat valentines. After all, nothing says love and valentines like Grumpy Cat! Ha; I think he's so funny.

As Brynn was working on her valentines, Dana's cousin sent me this pic of her daughter's box and valentines. Kelcey's daughter is also really into Harry Potter and so this is the book of monsters, as I understand it, and then a quidditch snitch for the valentine there next to it. (Confession: I have not actually read any of the Harry Potter books and I have only seen the first movie, so I'm not always hip to the jive on all things Potter.) Anyhow, I loved that she shared that with us and thought it was so creative! Brynn received a bit of bad news about her V-day box today; they aren't to be bringing boxes to class this year, I guess. She was pretty bummed, of course.

My sleepy lil piglet. hehe.

Tonight Clara FaceTimed with Seymour...and Grandpa and Grandma, too. ;-)

More Graduations + Start of Summer

A couple of weekends ago Clara had a very busy, but fun Saturday with her friend Cora and her sister, Violet. The sisters' dad took them to the Breakfast on the Farm near Hawley (We had gone many years ago. Clara was so little, she didn't remember it.)   They also stopped at the dirt track races on their way back into town and then Dana met up with them at MSUM so they could go to the oceanarium there. We had never been before, but it was on our "Moorhead List" of fun things to do in the 56560 zip code. So, check! Out on side-by-side rides any chance we get. We parked on Sunset Road, as we've dubbed it, to watch the sun go down. There is usually one or two other cars parked on this low maintenance road whenever we venture down there. Clara into her granny hobbies. :-) We attended the last of this year's graduation parties over the weekend. I went to one in town on Friday night and then Clara and I stopped at Karlie's party near Fergus Falls on our way to Z...

Easter + April Birthdays

The girls had Thursday, Friday and Monday off from school for the Easter break. So, Dana and I took most of the same time off (work) to match.  Always reading. 💜 Hanging out with Brynn. 💗 Dana and I went on a Costco date. We tried our hand at homemade ravioli again. I think it went a bit more smoothly compared to last time. Hubert's sister Abby stopped by for a visit. We hadn't seen her in a long time and so it was fun to have her We celebrated Dana's birthday and kicked it off with some Sandy's donuts. I don't recall what was so funny. haha. Clara's card. Birthday King Clara dyed eggs. I baked a birthday cake for Dana, messed it up getting it out of the pans, and Clara somehow cobbled it together into a masterpiece. Dana chose Lucky 13's for dinner out. On Saturday we packed up to hit up Oliver's birthday party before we went on to Dead Lake for Easter. Oliver is 9! January + Valentine's Day + CATS!

We ARE still alive over here and have not frozen to death. Here's what we've been up to for the past month and a half! Brynn and Hubert at the OG (Olive Garden): 'Lady and the Tramp' style. haha. Taking in a Force game...with extra fighting. It was very exciting. One Sunday when Clara was at a sleepover, the three of us went to Black Coffee Waffle Bar after church and then for some crepes and boba at Tea & Crepe. Then Brynn and I went prom dress shopping which was really fun. She did find a dress she loves so that was a relief. This is not the one she chose, but she tried on quite a few nice ones. Clara made crowns for the king and I (me). Clara had to write an essay to be considered for the robotics team at school. She waited for at least a couple of weeks to learn if she was accepted, and unfortunately was not. She was pretty disappointed, but she does have a chance to reapply next year when she's a fifth grader, and won't have to write another essay. I th...
